Haiti Diary: Nathalie Angibeau
January 12th changed my life

June 17, 2010

Nathalie AngibeauLast January, as I was driving to my last meeting after a long day at the office, the radio began to air the evening news. Suddenly, I heard a report that an earthquake had struck Haiti. At first, the news didn’t rattle me. I felt that the earthquake may not have caused much damage since Haiti was not known to be stricken by this type of natural disaster.

After my meeting, I went home and turned on the television to watch the late evening news. Then I saw it: images of total disaster appeared; men, women and children searching for loved ones; mass casualties, houses destroyed - and even the National Palace in complete ruins. I was shocked, I couldn’t believe it.

The next day, more images from the tragedy were emerging from Haiti for the world to see. At that moment, I knew that I needed to do something to help out my fellow Haitians. I started by volunteering my time by fundraising, but for me, this wasn’t enough.

I’ve had the opportunity to visit Haiti on several occasions since my parents felt it was important for me to connect with my roots. I have a good life in Canada. I had the opportunities to go to wonderful schools, live in beautiful homes, and I’ve never had to worry for my next meal. I feel it’s time for me to give back.

On May 25, I began a new journey as a delegate for the Canadian Red Cross in Haiti. Since my appointment, I’ve felt happy and excited knowing that I will be part of Haiti’s reconstruction. Not too long ago this island was called “La Perle des Antilles” (The Pearl of the Antilles”), I truly believe that one day she will regain this title.

Nathalie Angibeau is the visits coordinator for the Canadian Red Cross in Haiti. She brings a wealth of experience from her time as a political advisor for the Government of Quebec and as a public relation coordinator in the private sector. Nathalie has volunteer experience with several community organizations, including the Youth Haitian Chamber of Commerce in Montreal. Nathalie has visited Haiti on several occasions, including as an International Election Observer in 2006. She is currently working in Haiti for six months where she plans official visits to the field for the Canadian Red Cross delegation.
