The Canadian Red Cross is thrilled to announce exciting changes are being implemented to our Youth programming this fall. Following our review of the current changing market and the invaluable feedback we received from Training Partners, Instructors, and facilitators, we have revised and updated our training for youth.

In addition to Babysitting we will have a new program called Stay Safe! The Stay Safe! program is designed for younger youth, ages 9 – 13. Our goal is to equip this particular group with the necessary skills to stay safe on their own and within their community. Both programs focus on giving youth the applicable and age-appropriate skills they require, while simultaneously increasing their capacity to improve safety and respond to challenges accordingly.

Update for Facilitators
Facilitators looking to offer Youth programs will be able to do so by providing the Babysitting and Stay Safe! courses. In order to offer both of these new courses, current facilitators will need to purchase program materials. Facilitators will then be able to complete the online program updates, which will include an orientation to the two Youth programs, as well as the Fundamentals of Instruction for Youth Leaders. Facilitators will be referred to as Youth Leaders (a brand new title) after completing all steps within the update process.

Key changes to program standards:
  • Two courses, one for ages 9-13 and one for 11-15
  • New general minimum age for Youth Leaders of 18 years, or 16-17 years with adult support for emergency situations
  • Our Youth Leader Development Program will guide all new Youth Leaders through the process, which will ensure said process is more accessible. The Youth Leader designation will remain current, provided there is a Standard First Aid &CPR/ AED Level C certificate or Instructor/teacher designation in place
  • Completion criteria will no longer require a written knowledge evaluation. Participants will now need to show the following in order to successfully complete the course: attendance (100%), personal care skills, first aid skills, and appropriate behaviour
Youth First Aid program facilitators will be designated as Youth Leaders, and will be required to keep their Standard First Aid with CPR/AED C – or Instructor certification – current should they want to remain a Youth Leader.

Current Babysitter/PeopleSaver facilitators will have the opportunity to update their skills and obtain the new participant and Youth Leader materials. Pricing and times will be announced in September.
