Standards of Behaviour

As part of the revisions we’ve made to our First Aid Program, the Canadian Red Cross has developed a set of Standards of Behaviour for all First Aid instructional personnel. We are sharing this information about the Standards of Behaviour so Training Partners will be aware of this initiative. The intent of the Standards of Behaviour is to establish a common understanding of professional and ethical conduct expected of instructional personnel. Our primary objective continues to be to better support the instructional personnel, who are defined as Instructors, Instructor Trainers, Master Instructor Trainers, and Youth Leaders.

Traditionally, the Canadian Red Cross’ expectations of its instructional personnel were included within the First Aid National Program Standards. So as to be transparent, and to provide greater clarity as far as our expectations, the Red Cross has developed its Standards of Behaviour for all First Aid instructional personnel to review and sign.

The Standards of Behaviour will replace the present Code of Conduct, currently part of the First Aid National Program Standards. Both our quality assurance and issue management resolution processes remain in place as per our current program standards (October 2014). The First Aid National Program Standards will be fully revised, updated, and ready for release with the core programs in the winter of 2017.

All First Aid instructional personnel will be asked to review and sign the Standards of Behaviour. We began with our MITs in September; our ITs will review and sign at recertification clinics throughout the fall. At the Canadian Red Cross, Instructor Trainers play a key role in modeling behaviours and ensuring Red Cross Instructors are educated about the Standards of Behaviour, therefore beginning this process with ITs was a necessary step.

Youth Leaders and other instructional personnel will be asked to review and acknowledge the Standards of Behaviour as part of their respective online updates.
