The flooding
Bosnia and Herzegovina
On May 13, 2014, unprecedented floods inundated large areas of Bosnia and Herzegovina, affecting over a million people and displacing 89,981 residents.
That same day, in neighbouring Serbia, torrential rainfalls brought the two-month average rainfalls in just two days. The rainfall prompted rising levels of several rivers and a national state of emergency was declared on May 15. Over 1.6 million people were affected, with over 32,000 people displaced.
Red Cross Response
The Red Cross Society of Bosnia and Herzegovina mobilized teams in the affected areas, who assisted authorities with evacuations as well as provided blankets, mattresses, drinking water, food and hygiene kits, rubber boots and water purifiers to more than 10,000 people.
In Serbia, the Red Cross immediately sent disaster response teams to endangered regions of Serbia. Working with emergency teams from Serbia and abroad, the Red Cross evacuated dozens of people and delivered food and water to hundreds of others cut off by the raging waters. In addition to saving lives and providing aid, the Red Cross of Serbia activated its tracing service, enabling people to enquire about family members missing in the floods.
Road to recovery
Donations from the Canadian Red Cross appeal went directly to activities related to food security, nutrition and livelihoods in Bosnia and Herzegovina and implementing shelter and settlements in Serbia, as well as distribution of household items such as mattresses and rubber boots, support for shelter repairs, and distribution and assistance with driers, dehumidifiers and pumps.
