Four Canadian Red Cross Delegates have been deployed to assist people affected by the devastation caused by widespread flooding in Mozambique. The health professionals are working alongside their Norwegian Red Cross counterparts in an emergency health unit that will serve as a hospital for the population of Beira in southern Mozambique.
Just last week the Canadian Red Cross trained 30 doctors and nurses to work overseas in emergencies caused by natural or manmade disasters in a professional delegate training course. The training was partly supported by the government of Quebec.
Southern Africa has been experiencing devastating floods over the past month and it is estimated that 140,000 people are displaced and living in temporary shelters. Torrential rains have caused rivers to overflow and increased pressure on dams, resulting in flooding in central and southern parts of Mozambique. The situation has been made worse because of Cyclone Favio which has made landfall in Mozambique with very strong winds. The situation is expected to worsen.
