Following severe earthquakes in Peru, the Canadian Red Cross has sent emergency supplies and a delegate to the affected area. Jean-Pierre Taschereau has been deployed to Peru to meet a plane load of Canadian Red Cross supplies that have been prepositioned in Panama. The 22 tonnes of relief items include blankets, tarpaulins and kitchen sets. Taschereau is Head of Operations, helping to ensure that supplies get to survivors as quickly as possible.
According to official figures, 514 people have died, more than 1000 people are injured, and nearly 37,500 houses have been destroyed. It’s estimated that the town of Pisco, with a population of just over 54,000 people, has suffered around 70% destruction of its infrastructure.
Canadians wishing to support relief and recovery activities in Peru are encouraged to contribute by donating online, calling 1-800-418-1111 or contacting their local Canadian Red Cross office. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked “Peru Earthquake” and mailed to Canadian Red Cross National Office, 400 Cooper Street, Suite 8000, Ottawa, Ontario K2P 2H8. Donations of goods are not accepted.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has appealed for $4.8 million to support the Peruvian Red Cross operation. Should the money raised in Canada exceed the needs in Peru, funds will be transferred to the Canadian Red Cross International Disaster Relief Fund, to help survivors of future international disasters.
