Media Advisory 03/03/04

In response to the deteriorating situation in Haiti-the poorest country in the Americas the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has stepped up its humanitarian operations in the country. The Red Cross in Haiti supports hospitals, provides medical supplies, delivers medical treatment and visits people detained because of the conflict.

Haiti is one of the most impoverished countries in the world and the poorest in the northern hemisphere. 60% of inhabitants have no access to drinking water and public transport is practically non-existent. Over 40% of the population has no access to even the most rudimentary health services; last year life expectancy fell below 50 years of age and infant mortality runs high (79 deaths before one year of age in every 1000 births).
