Manitoba Floods (2011)

Note: The following appeal is now closed.  You can support our ongoing work by donating to the Canadian Red Cross

It has been four months since the Canadian Red Cross began providing support to flood-affected Manitobans, after an unprecedented surge of water across multiple river basins and major lakes, combined with severe rain and wind storms, caused flooding throughout many parts of Manitoba.

Over 7,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes since flooding began this spring. Since the Red Cross launched full flood operations on April 12, we have responded to the situation on multiple fronts in over 55 communities. As the situation continues to unfold in the Province, the Red Cross will continue to provide assistance, which may include urgent and essential relief and recovery items such as food, clothing, lodging, medical items, basic repairs, household goods, and occupational needs, as well as clean-up kits and referrals to other services available. The Red Cross works closely with other partners to ensure needs are met and will not duplicate assistance provided by other partners, including government and private insurance.

The Canadian Red Cross supports specific needs and vulnerabilities that require support now and aid for families who need additional help beyond provincial disaster assistance. The Canadian Red Cross is committed to helping families recover from this disaster—and your financial support can help achieve this.

Canadian Red Cross in action:

  • Volunteers have registered over 4,200 evacuees, who can now access on-going Red Cross aid and government support.
  • Over 290 volunteers and staff from across Canada have provided nearly 17,000 hours for this response.
  • Approximately $22,000 worth of food and over $100,000 worth of cleaning supplies has been provided.

There is still a considerable amount of work to be done, as more than 1,000 Manitobans remain unable to return home, and the threat of major storms and high winds continues to keep communities on edge. Your donation ensures we can help people rebuild their lives now, and in the coming years.

How you can help

Canadians wishing to support the Canadian Red Cross Manitoba Floods Response efforts are encouraged to contribute by calling 1-800-418-1111, donating through the website, or contacting their local Red Cross office. The Canadian Red Cross is currently responding to the Manitoba floods as well as in other communities across western Canada who are experiencing disasters. Donations made to the Western Canada Severe Weather Fund, in support of the Manitoba Floods, will be used in Manitoba. Should donations exceed the needs in Manitoba, Red Cross will continue to support families experiencing disasters in other regions across Western Canada.
