Recent torrential rains have caused flooding in several communities in the Peace River Regional District in northeast BC. Over 200 homes have been affected and several families have had to find emergency accommodation. Many others are feeling the effects in their communities.
In the days and weeks ahead, as families in the Peace River Region begin to rebuild their lives, livelihoods and communities, the Canadian Red Cross will be there to help.

How you can help
Canadians wishing to support the Canadian Red Cross BC Disaster response are encouraged to contribute by calling 1-800-418-1111, donating through redcross.ca, or contacting their local Red Cross office. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross, earmarked “BC Disaster Response” and mailed to the Canadian Red Cross National Office, 400 Cooper Street, Suite 8000, Ottawa, Ontario, K2P 2H8.
The situation in the region continues to unfold, but it is clear that the needs will be great. When the water recedes, families will return to damaged houses, lost possessions and destroyed livelihoods. Working with the District of Chetwynd and Emergency Management BC the Red Cross has opened a resiliency centre to support those affected by the flooding. Operated by Red Cross volunteers, the centre provides information, relief and recovery services and support to affected families.
When the waters recede, houses may be filled with mud and debris. Families will require clean-up materials so they can safely return home. Parents with young children will need to quickly replace destroyed possessions such as cribs and highchairs, and individuals with health needs may need to replace essential items such as hearing aids, glasses and medication.
The Canadian Red Cross is currently responding to disasters in BC, as well as fires and disasters in other communities across western Canada. Donations made to the Western Canada Severe Weather Fund in support of BC Disasters, will be used in BC. Should donations exceed the needs in BC, Red Cross will continue to support families experiencing disasters in other regions across Western Canada.
