2009 Ontario Tornado Appeal

The Canadian Red Cross is appealing for cash donations to assist those affected by tornadoes that touched down in the City of Vaughan during the evening of August 20.  Donations will address unmet short-term needs that are emerging, particularly for those who have been left homeless for what could be as long as weeks or months.

Red Cross workers immediately responded by staffing two registration and shelter facilities opened by the City after a state of emergency was declared, and has also mobilized an Emergency Response Unit, moving cots, blankets and other supplies to affected areas. About 100 residents were forced to evacuate their homes, after the twister tore down trees, ripped off roofs, and destroyed cars.
