On February 15, the more than 1,000 residents of Badger, Newfoundland were forced to evacuate from their homes when a massive ice jam sparked major flooding from three rivers, leaving their town rapidly encased in ice and water. Red Cross was immediately called into action to provide for the needs of the displaced people, many who escaped with only the clothing on their backs.

Volunteers at the Core of Red Cross Badger Flood Response
When Desmond Dillon received a phone call from the Red Cross at his home in Gander, Newfoundland on the evening of February 16, he knew that this was going to be like no other day he had encountered as a Red Cross volunteer. The entire population of Badger - more than 1,000 people - had barely managed to escape the frozen floodwaters that had rushed through their town. Many had evacuated with only the clothes on their backs.
