At the core of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is the mandate and responsibility to protect and assist victims of conflict. Hostilities can escalate without warning and in the face of such unpredictable emergencies, the Red Cross attaches great importance in its ability to respond rapidly, with neutrality and impartiality.

For more than two years, violence has brought death and destruction to Syria, and millions of people have been displaced from their homes or have fled the country. Every day, across the country, Syrian Arab Red Crescent volunteers and staff are risking their lives to get aid to the most vulnerable Syrians. As of August 2013, 22 Syrian Arab Red Crescent members had lost their lives in the line of duty, while responding to this crisis. Despite the challenges, the Red Crescent, with support from its partners, is providing assistance to more than two million people each month.
The Red Cross is also responding to support those individuals and families that have fled Syria and are now displaced in countries within the region. As of August 2013, more than 1.9 million individuals had sought refuge in neighbouring countries.
Newly arriving refugees have faced harsh conditions at home, and many have had limited access to health care. To address these needs, the Canadian Red Cross has partnered with the Finnish, German and Norwegian Red Cross Societies to establish a field hospital in a camp for newly arriving Syrian refugees in Jordan. The situation in Syria has also exacerbated precarious situations in the region, and the Canadian Red Cross continues to monitor the regional implications closely.
Canadians wishing to support the enormous humanitarian relief and recovery efforts in Syria and surrounding countries are encouraged to make a financial donation online, at their local Red Cross office or by calling 1-800-418-1111. Please earmark donations “Syria Crisis Fund”.
Funds raised will go to support emergency efforts by the Red Cross Movement. This may include relief items (for example, blankets, sleeping mats, food parcels and hygiene items), medical supplies, equipment and deploying emergency personnel. This fund will cover numerous countries including those currently affected and those potentially affected in the future.
Our organization is transparent, open and accountable in reporting how your donations are used to make a difference in the lives of those that need our help. The Canadian Red Cross Society received a grade of A+ in every category, including overall charity efficiency, fundraising efficiency, and governance and transparency from Money Sense’s 2013 Canadian charity rating report. We were also among only two charities that appeared on both the biggest and top-rated charities lists. These accomplishments prove that you, our donors, can have confidence in the fact that your dollars are used to make the greatest possible impact in the lives of Canadians and those we help around the world.
