The Canadian Red Cross recognized that compression-only CPR is an acceptable alternative for those who are unwilling, unable, untrained, or are no longer able to perform full CPR.

On May 2, at least 22,000 people lost their lives when Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar.  As local Red Cross volunteers responded within the country, the Canadian Red Cross appealed to Canadians to make financial contributions to assist in this disaster response.

A 7.9-magnitude earthquake devastated the south-western province of Sichuan on May 12 leaving more than 65,000 dead, more than 23,100 missing, 360,000 injured and 11.3 million people displaced. In addition, 5,500 children are now orphans as a result of the earthquake according. Canadians were once again asked to support the disaster response efforts.

In September, the Canadian Red Cross ramped up its relief operations in response to a request from the American Red Cross to deploy nine trained and experienced Canadian Red Cross volunteers to Texas. This was in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Ike and the volunteers provided support with logistics, staffing and shelter management.
