The Canadian Red Cross announced the expansion of its successful malaria program that distributed nearly 2.6 million mosquito nets in six African countries. These activities have been made possible through the generous support of the Canadian International Development Agency.

In June Judi Fairholm, Canadian Red Cross RespectED: Violence & Abuse Prevention national technical director, was awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal.

After nearly 10 years of dedicated service, leadership and commitment, Dr. Duplessis, Secretary General of the Canadian Red Cross, is appointed to a two-year posting as Special Envoy on Avian and Human Influenza for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (International Federation).

Since the start of Asia’s monsoon and typhoon season in June of 2007, heavy rains, flash floods, storms and landslides caused widespread devastation in many countries. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India and Pakistan were all hit by major floods and displaced more than 235 million people.

An earthquake struck Peru in August and killed at least 350 people and caused severe damage.
