June 22, 2006 the Canadian Red Cross Society joined its sister Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in welcoming the Magen David Adom (MDA) of Israel and the Palestine Red Crescent Society into the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

In 2006 Kenya, Somalia, Haiti, Ethiopia, and the Philippines were hit by a devastating typhoon and the violence escalated in the Middle East.
Back at home, Canadians generously contributed to help those affected by the armed conflict in Lebanon.

In support of the 2006 International AIDS Conference in Toronto, the Canadian Red Cross Society hosted 85 national societies and regional delegations from around the world. This group came together to mobilize the resources of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in its global response to HIV and AIDS. With a network of over 90 million volunteers worldwide, the Movement is on the frontlines helping to tackle this pandemic.

Between Nov. 20 and 26 of 2006, with support from the Canadian Red Cross, over 4,000 volunteers from the Sierra Leone Red Cross distributed 875,000 long-lasting insecticide-treated bed-nets. These nets will provide protection for up to four years.
