2004

On Dec. 26, 2004 a devastating earthquake hit the Indian Ocean. This earthquake resulted in the devastating tsunamis that hit along the coasts of most landmasses bordering the Indian Ocean. The tsunami killed more than 200,000 people in eleven countries and was one of the deadliest natural disasters in history. Canadians responded like never before with fundraising events organized across the country. $360 million was raised and the Red Cross offices received volunteers in unprecedented numbers. Ongoing Canadian Red Cross relief efforts are expected to last ten years.

RebuildingEntire villages have now been re-housed along the west coast of Aceh province, some of the worst affected areas by the tsunami.
