1940s

The Canadian Red Cross became firmly embedded in Canadian society through its extensive war work.  By the end of 1945, one-quarter of the Canadian population were active Red Cross members.

During World War II, the Canadian Red Cross organized $80 million in money and materials for the comfort and relief of the sick and wounded. The Red Cross offered programs to help the wounded veterans who were returning to Canada to integrate back into society.

After the war, the Red Cross again returned its focus to health and safety issues. One way they did this was by starting the first Canadian Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service blood depot in Vancouver. The aim of this service was to provide blood free-of-charge to anyone in Canada who needed it.
