The Canadian Red Cross started a post-war program of health education. This new program became deeply involved in public health through: outpost hospitals and nursing stations, home nursing classes, visiting housekeepers, nutrition services, and the establishment of courses in public health nursing at five Canadian universities.

It was also during this time that the Junior Red Cross was formed with the goal of improving the health of Canadian children.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) recognized the Canadian Red Cross as an independent national Red Cross Society. This permitted the Canadian Red Cross to join the League of Red Cross Societies, today known as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
