Back to school: Strategies to stop bullying

It’s the most wonderful time of the year (cue the iconic back to school shopping commercial). This catchy jingle is not the best reflection of the majority of children and teens who are returning to class. For some, it’s the end of summer vacation that stings the most, but for others it is the fear of returning to a place where they are bullied.

University students confront realities of war

Defining a child soldier, determining appropriate treatment for prisoners of war, and negotiating peaceful resolutions were among the tasks completed recently by university students participating in a Red Cross club workshop at the University of Calgary.

The interactive Paxium workshop focused on International Humanitarian Law (IHL), and increased awareness of the difficult decisions political, military, and civilian personnel have to make during conflicts.

Celebrating Day of Pink in Saskatchewan

While it takes a year-round, whole-community approach to stop bullying, on April 1, communities across Saskatchewan wore pink to help raise awareness on issues around bullying.

We share some highlights from Red Cross Day of Pink events and activities held throughout the province, in schools and workplaces.

Highlights from bullying prevention Twitter chat

On February 25th, parents, educators and some of our partners who work in the field of bullying prevention education and awareness joined us for a Twitter chat as we marked Pink Shirt Day. Here are hightlights from the Twitter conversation, compiled through Storify. Thanks to all the participants, including Red Cross social ambassador and author of book on parenting and mental health, Ann Douglas.

Alberta student makes giving a part of life

It has always been in Tory Dalrymple's nature to give back. On her eighth birthday, she asked her guests to donate to charity instead of bringing a gift. Since then, the 13-year-old from High River, Alberta, has made giving a part of her life. After learning about the Ebola crisis in school, she set her sights on making a donation to the Red Cross.

My body is nobody's body but mine

While the memories of childhood can be vague, this song (My Body Is Nobody's Body But Mine) still makes my ears perk up. It may ring familiar with my fellow children of the 80s. For the uninitiated, the song was part of a sexual abuse prevention program aimed at children.

Youth create videos to help Alberta flood recovery

In an effort to help others recover after the floods, teenagers from schools in High River, Calgary, Canmore and Morley are creating short videos detailing their experiences with the disaster. The teenagers' videos are short but say a great deal about the Alberta floods of 2013. They use simple language but express powerful emotions. And this is precisely the point of the arts project funded by the Canadian Red Cross called Youth Creating Disaster Recovery (YCDR).
