At the Canadian Red Cross, we talk a lot about personal preparedness. Be ready for disasters by knowing the risks, making a plan, and getting an emergency kit. But how does the Red Cross prepare for these situations?

Most people look forward to retirement as a time to slow down and relax, but that was not the plan for Hamilton resident Jim DePass. In 2006, after finishing a rewarding 40-year career with a steel manufacturer, Jim decided that his first priority as a retiree was to volunteer, and his sights were set on the Canadian Red Cross. 

Volunteers work tirelessly with the Canadian Red Cross to assist the most vulnerable in their communities. As one of those volunteers, I can tell you it is a rewarding experience, but also one that presents unique challenges.

For many people in Newfoundland and Labrador, holiday festivities wouldn’t be complete without the centuries-old tradition of mummering — a disguised house visiting and guessing game.  Canadian Red Cross staff in St. John's recently got in on the fun too.

It really is the season of giving! With a recent Red Cross survey showing a majority of Canadians want to give back this holiday season, we thought we'd take a look at how to do that.

“Babies need diapers. People need houses,” says 8-year-old Kamloops resident Jenna Kansky. 
Jenna and her 7-year-old friend Isabella Sharp set-up a lemonade stand to raise funds to support the Canadian Red Cross BC Fires appeal.  

“Le coeur de la classe.” That’s what Julian’s teacher calls him – the heart of the class. The 10-year-old Ottawa boy has always had a generous spirit and been aware of those around him who might be going through difficult times. As individuals and families in his region were affected by flooding this past week, Julian decided to embark on a fundraising effort to support them.
