The Canadian Red Cross, in partnership with the South Sudan Red Cross, is working to implement the Improving Maternal, Newborn, and Child Survival in Warrap State project in Gogrial State, South Sudan. This is a four-year project that is made possible through the support of the Government of Canada.
The project has a focus on water, sanitation and hygiene promotion (WASH), health promotion and mobile medical outreach teams, and integrated community case management (iCCM).
As part of the WASH component, an emphasis is being placed on the drilling of 40 boreholes, and the rehabilitation of other boreholes. These boreholes will help supply communities with safe drinking water. So far, nine water management committees have been trained to maintain the boreholes in each community.
In late February, the Ministry of Health, Director of Infrastructure, Executive Chief of Wun-Ajok, and other community leaders joined representatives from the Canadian Red Cross, South Sudan Red Cross, and the people of Wun-Ajok, to officially open the boreholes and hand them over to the community.
These boreholes are the first water sources in these areas.
