Thanking Red Cross volunteers across Canada

Last week, across the country, the Canadian Red Cross has been thanking its many generous volunteers for National Volunteer Week (April 10-16).

With #ThankAVolunteer, we have been sharing messages of gratitude from the Canadian Red Cross and encouraged others to do the same. Check out some of the great photos shared with #ThankAVolunteer throughout the week.

Our staff across Canada, sent in their own photos with thanks to our volunteers.

Profiled throughout the week, here are some of our inspiring volunteers who help in various Red Cross programs and services:

Candace McCool, Red Cross volunteer for 22 yearsRecently recognized for her volunteer service at the Volunteer Toronto Legacy Awards, Candace McCool has been part of the Red Cross response to high profile situations including the Haiti Earthquake, the Asia Tsunami, the Ontario blackout, a gas explosion at Kipling/Bloor station, and numerous house fires since she joined as a volunteer 22 years ago.  She has taken a lead role responding to Hot and Cold Weather Alerts, Personal Disaster Assistance calls and works passionately on connecting family members separated by war. During the SARS outbreak, she willingly delivered medical kits to people who were in home isolation when others were afraid to.

Thank you for your dedication, Candace!

Jamal Serrar is a man of dedicationJamal Serrar is a man of dedication. As an emergency doctor, he is asked to support emergency medical teams in over 55 hospitals across Quebec and beyond.
With emergencies being part of his daily routine, becoming a Canadian Red Cross humanitarian aid worker was an obvious choice. He has aided in many missions, including one in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, another one in Jordan in 2014 to provide healthcare to refugees living in a camp, and a third in Guinea at an Ebola treatment centre in 2015.
“It’s a serious and honest organization, committed to the health and wellness of people both locally and internationally,” he explained.
He said that the Red Cross is known worldwide and provides an opportunity for people like him, and like you, to give back. Collectively, if we all do our part — however small — we can make a big difference.

Thank you, Jamal, for making a difference!

Jed Dyck helps in Health Equipment Loan ProgramWhen you need equipment from our Health Equipment Loan Program, Jed Dyck is one of the people who makes sure it’s ready to use when you leave your local Red Cross office. He says repairing equipment in Kelowna helps keep him active and creates a better a life for others.
“I like to work with my hands, mechanical things, so it’s ideal. The setting here is so good, and the people at the Red Cross are wonderful!”
Jed was new to Kelowna when he started with the Red Cross and says he found volunteering was a great way to meet new friends.

Thanks for sharing, Jed, and happy National Volunteer Week!

Annie Chon volunteers her time processing donations and issuing tax receiptsThe general public rarely gets to see Annie Chon, who volunteers her time processing their generous donations and issuing tax receipts. But she still feels she’s building relationships with them by taking a moment to appreciate their humanitarianism and support to the Canadian Red Cross.

As a volunteer who’s pursuing a career in global health, Annie strongly believes the values of humanity, neutrality, and impartiality will become the groundwork of her entire career.
Being around the Canadian Red Cross office always gives Annie more opportunities to get involved. “There are tons of exciting volunteer positions that I can participate in year-‘round, and I can meet diverse groups of people and exchange knowledge and perspectives.”

Thanks for sharing, Annie, and for all you do!
