Building community resilience in South Sudan: Video

In 2011, the Canadian Red Cross, with support from the Government of Canada, began the Building Community Resilience Project in South Sudan, supporting the South Sudan Red Cross.

Over the course of four years, the project aimed to reach some 25,000 beneficiaries, increasing their capacity to address their food security needs, through sustainable farming practices, thereby minimizing their risk to food shocks.

In addition to reducing their food security vulnerability, the project worked to enhance the livelihood capacities of the communities' youth, improved access to water sources and mobilized the community around health and hygiene issues.

The project was implemented in eight bomas in Budi County, in Eastern Equatoria State.

In June 2015, the project ended, and the following videos were created to share best practices to ensure future food security programming is sustained and improved.

This video featured here specifically highlights Lilian Natima’s story which exemplifies the Vocational Training aspect of the project. Through this program, Lilian learnt to sew. Eventually, she was able to use her newly-acquired skills to make a business, selling clothing she had sewed.

“Before Red Cross came, life was hard and nutrition and health was bad. Since, there’s been a positive change,” she says.

Lilian can now provide for her family. “This program has changed my life,” she says.
