The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

IRAQ:  Recent fighting in the central Iraqi city of Ramadi forced thousands of people to flee their houses20150519-Iraq-RamadiIDPs-Main2-(1).jpg and look for refuge in other safer areas in the country, particularly in Al Amiriyah Fallujah and Al Khalidiya in Al Anbar province. The Iraqi Red Crescent Society reported that more than 2,000 families were displaced by the latest round of violence, worsening the already fragile humanitarian situation in the country. The Iraqi Red Crescent Society has immediately geared up to respond to the new humanitarian crisis the country, and has dispatched aid convoys to cater to the needs of the newly displaced families. The Red Crescent has so far distributed 1,000 food portions, 500 blankets, 250 hygiene kits, and 750 relief kits to the internally displaced people.

TUVALU: In Tuvalu, a project that links high-tech forecasting and traditional knowledge to help people cope with disasters and climate change will be piloted to deliver meaningful weather and climate information in an effort to strengthen people’s resilience. Tuvalu is one of ten countries where the Red Cross is working on a project to improve weather and climate information.
