Photo of the day: Red Cross solidarity in the mountains of Nepal

Red Cross aid worker Bonnie Kearns, a nurse from Sarnia, Ontario, has been in Nepal for the past several weeks, working in a remote community affected by the earthquake to provide basic health care services.

She describes a close call she experienced on May 12, when a second powerful earthquake struck the country, and how a young local Red Cross volunteer came to offer protection.

We were high in the mountains doing a mobile clinic when the second earthquake started. We were in a building with about 15 people. I was behind a counter and the last to get out. Abijeet, our young interpreter raced back in, put his arms around me, covered my head with his body, and he pulled me out. Then we ran down the road as we heard that a house had collapsed. When we got there, we heard that no one was inside the house when rolled down the hill. The building we were in shook hard but it did not collapse. Abijeet did not know that the building was stable when he raced in to protect me. Thank you, Abijeet.

Bonnie and the other Canadian Red Cross aid workers continue to provide medical care to people affected by the worst earthquake to hit the country since 1934. They are working closely with local Red Cross volunteers and healthcare professionals.
