The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

SOUTH AFRICA: The South African Red Cross Society has adopted a community-based approach South African Red Cross adopts community-based approach to TBto tuberculosis  treatment in the Eastern Cape. This approach focuses not simply on the patient adhering to their drug regime, but on their overall wellbeing and social support system. Reducing the stigma that is often associated with multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis is an important part of ensuring strong social support for patients.

SOMALIA:  In Somalia nature and years of conflict have conspired to restrict the people's access to water, the very essence of life. To ease their suffering, the ICRC endeavours to provide water to detainees and civilians affected by conflict, and to improve their sanitation facilities. To help alleviate problems caused by severe water shortage, the ICRC's water and habitat program in Somalia works not only to supply water to detention centres but also to meet the water and sanitation needs of nearly 300,000 people across the country.
