Round-up: Updates from India and Jamaica

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

Flooding in IndiaINDIA: Weeks of torrential rain in south India have left thousands of people facing an uncertain future. In November, the heaviest rain in decades brought widespread flooding across the south Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh causing more than 200 deaths and affecting 1.8 million people. To meet immediate needs, the Indian Red Cross Society has so far distributed 3,000 packets of food as well as blankets, clothing, cooking sets, tarps and mosquito nets. Local Red Cross branches also provided cooked food for people forced to evacuate to schools, places of worship or community centres.

JAMAICA: The Jamaica Red Cross and the ICRC are working together to provide local youth with solutions to mitigate the consequences of violence.  The joint JRC/ICRC project stems from an agreement signed on 22 October 2015 and is sponsored by the International Olympic Committee. Its goal is to reduce the impact of violent behaviour among at-risk children and young people through an integrated after-school sports-based program. It will be conducted in two violence-prone inner-city communities: Central Village in St Catherine and Canaan Heights in Clarendon.
