Round-up: Red Cross responds to emergencies in Pakistan and Iraq

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

PAKISTAN: For the fifth consecutive year, Pakistan is reeling from the impact of severe monsoon flooding. More than 250 people have died and close to 600,000 have been affected by the floods which began in early September. In its initial response to the floods, the Red Crescent has provided relief support to 1,000 people in Punjab and AJK. In the coming weeks it plans to reach a further 35,000 with food, emergency shelter, emergency health services and household items such as kitchen sets, hygiene kits and blankets.

IRAQ: Over 1.4 million Iraqis have been forced to leave their homes and relocate to safer regions in their country or abroad as the recent surge in violence has put their security at risk. Food safety has become another major concern that required attention from the Iraqi Red Crescent Society and other Red Cross and Red Crescent societies involved in the country’s crisis.  In response to the situation, the Italian Red Cross has set up a field kitchen in the Dohuk governorate of Iraq’s Kurdish region. The kitchen is equipped and prepared to cook up to 10,000 meals per day and is strategically located around 25 kilometers away from the largest internally displaced persons camp in the country.
