Red Cross Society of China responding to earthquake

A strong 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Yunnan province of China on Sunday. The Red Cross Society of China has initially mobilized 2,000 family kits, containing household items for families displaced from their homes, as well as quilts and jackets. Red Cross search and rescue teams from neighbouring provinces have been deployed to help reach survivors, a mission made difficult by aftershocks, landslides and debris.

There have been no requests for international assistance. The Canadian Red Cross is coordinating closely with the Red Cross Society of China and remains on standby with staff, stock and our emergency field hospital if needed.
