Round-up: Red Cross responds to emergencies in China and Panama

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

CHINA: The Red Cross Society of China deployed emergency teams and mobilized relief supplies to help communities battered by Super Typhoon Rammasun, described as the severest storm to hit the country in more than 40 years. As the storm system swept towards southern China from the Philippines, where it left more than 90 people dead, the Red Cross Society’s branches in Hainan and Guangxi activated their highest-level emergency procedures and deployed three Emergency Response Teams.  In order to support the population in the worst-hit provinces, the Society mobilized nearly 5,000 family kits containing household items, thousands of quilts and jackets,  more than 200 tents, and rice to help provide food for people displaced by the typhoon.

PANAMA: Although authorities have stated that the water of the La Villa river is now fit for human consumption, doubts persist regarding the safety of the water in the region of Azuero following the contamination of the river that left 20,000 families without access to potable water.  Panamanian Red Cross continues providing support to local and national authorities with the distribution of water, jerry cans for water collection and storage as well as providing information on water and sanitation, through activities which are being led by Panamanian Red Cross.
