A small school with a whole lot of heart in Saskatchewan

Guest blog by Candace Lamb, Canadian Red Cross

For the past 38 years, four to five times a year, the Canadian Red Cross office in Saskatoon has been receiving letters from the Dinsmore Red Cross Youth. They are always in a child’s handwriting telling us what they’ve done to help others and include a donation from one of their recent fundraisers. The letters always have great personality and the kids are eager to share what they are doing.

The teacher, Jeff Lawrence, and his grade three/four classes have formed the Dinsmore Red Cross Youth in a small community of 375 people southwest of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Their club has a chairperson, a secretary and a treasurer. They’re learning great business skills like holding proper meetings (they even take minutes and file motions!) and how to make bank deposits. They are also learning valuable skills through their events like reaching out to their community, how to promote events and fundraising skills. They’ve organized everything from talent and art shows to bake sales and teas.

Our local outreach coordinator recently attended their tea, which was served on real china, and had a great time. “They are such a delightful bunch with such amazing manners. I’m just so honoured that they would choose Red Cross to benefit from all of their hard work,” she told me. She also thought it was neat to be sitting at tea with other adults from the community, recalling when they were in the Red Cross club years earlier and were now there supporting the kids.

Since they started, they’ve donated almost $18,000 to Red Cross to help others in Saskatchewan and around the world! We are thrilled that Mr. Lawrence has chosen Red Cross to support and teach young people such valuable skills.

We wanted to share the most recent letter we received from the Dinsmore Red Cross Youth.
