New Social Ambassador: Jamie-Leigh Cuthbertson

Guest post by Kathryn Dunmore, Red Cross Blogger

We welcome Jamie-Leigh Cuthbertson as our newest Social Ambassador. Jamie (@JamieLeighTO) had been part of the social media team as consultant but now continues as a volunteer to support the Canadian Red Cross’ online presence.

The relationship started when Jamie entered on online contest where she named the Canadian Red Cross as her charity of choice.

"I wrote a blog on a charity I would hypothetically donate a billion dollars to for an online contest," said Jamie. "I chose the Canadian Red Cross because I’ve always admired their work and especially appreciated their social media savvy presence online."

Connecting with the Canadian Red Cross social media team, Jamie was soon writing blogs, producing content and moderating social media as well as helping with social strategy for specific Red Cross programs.

"I learned a lot in my time with the Red Cross but, more importantly, I learned about the impact social media can have in a disaster and an entirely different way that people are using information from social platforms to help identify problems and provide relief."

Jamie had her own social media consulting business and was soon bringing this expertise to the Canadian Red Cross social media landscape, adding her energy and enthusiasm for new tools and ideas.

"For Red Cross, social media is not only a great way to add a personal face to an international organization but also an incredibly useful way to gather localised information in a disaster to build situational analysis and direct the response."

Jamie was directly involved in disaster management online with the Alberta floods, Ontario ice storms, as well as educational issues such as water safety.

"Social media volunteers with the Red Cross play a direct role in guiding disaster response in real life, and provide life-saving information online to those affected. I’m looking forward to continuing to spread the word about the important work the Canadian Red Cross does. Volunteering with the Canadian Red Cross is an incredible opportunity."
