Round-up: Red Cross supports communities in Ethiopia and Mexico

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

ETHIOPIA: According to Ethiopia’s 2011 Demographic and Health Survey, nearly half a million children under-five die every year. Neonatal mortality accounts for 30 per cent of under-five mortality. Due to a weak and difficult to access health system, women continue to die as a result of preventable complications that arise before, during and after childbirth. Since 2013, the Ethiopian Red Cross Society, with support from the Netherlands Red Cross, has been implementing an infant and neonatal health project across West Hararghe, Silit, South Gondar and Jijiga zones. The National Society is complementing the government’s efforts in building the capacity of health professionals and strengthening services at health centres.

MEXICO: On average, the Mexican Red Cross provides more than 1.3 million people with emergency ambulance services, free of cost, every year. This equates to Mexican Red Cross responding to eight out of ten ambulance calls. Pre-hospital care is necessary and provides a unique opportunity for millions of people to receive adequate and life-saving health care prior to reaching the hospital. The health workforce, including trained Red Cross volunteers, are delivering crucial health care services, empowering individuals and increasing local access to life-saving preventive and curative measures. Volunteers, as members of their own communities, are familiar with their environment and know how best to bridge the social, cultural and other barriers that impede progress towards universal coverage.
