Round-up: Red Cross responds to emergencies in Turkey and Sierra Leone

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

TURKEY: Food support is the most pressing need for the Turkish Red Crescent Society (TRCS) as it responds to the tens of thousands of people entering Turkey from Syria. In cooperation with the Turkish authorities, the TRCS has provided bottles of water, energy biscuits, first aid and psychosocial support. The organization has also deployed mobile kitchens and provided over 95,000 meals so far.

SIERRA LEONE: The Sierra Leone Red Cross Society, with support from the IFRC, has launched the expansion of its Ebola operations in Sierra Leone with a three day workshop. Designed to train newly recruited staff who are responding exclusively to the Ebola crisis, the workshop will see Red Cross activities expand from one district to six. This positions the Red Cross, and its country-wide network of volunteers, 1,600 of whom have already been mobilized to respond to the outbreak, to address the most urgent needs of communities in an effective and coordinated approach. Canadians wishing to support the Red Cross response in the West Africa can make a financial donation to the West Africa Ebola Fund online at www.redcross.ca, by calling 1-800-418-1111, or by contacting their local Red Cross office.
