Full circle with Meals on Wheels for two long-time volunteers

Jean and Arthur Mosher’s experience with Meals on Wheels has come full circle. Both were volunteers over 25 years ago when the Red Cross took over operating the program from a church in the Etobicoke community where Jean and Arthur lived.

Arthur stopped delivering the meal in 1996 after having health issues himself, but Jean continued until recently when she had to undergo surgery for a hip replacement.

These days, Jean and Arthur both are clients of the program receiving meals from the Red Cross three days a week.

“We started using the services for ourselves after my surgery. It is funny having people who I know from volunteering now coming to my house,” said Jean. “It was such a help when I was incapacitated and recovering and the volunteers are so kind and wish me well.”

Once Jean is fully recovered, she plans on returning to her volunteer work with Meals on Wheels.

“It’s my way of saying thank you to the community that has been so good to me since we moved here in 1968.”

Having a little bit of extra time at home allows Jean and Arthur to spend time with their family and reflect on their adventurous life so far which includes having the whole family live abroad in Pakistan for four years back in 1963 when Arthur was an engineer with Ontario Hydro.

October is Community Support Services Month

The Red Cross thanks the thousands of volunteers across Ontario who give so much to further our mission. It’s nice to know that they have access to the same great support that they provide when they need it themselves.
