Update on flooding response in Alberta

Canadian Red Cross volunteers are continuing to respond to significant flooding affecting thousands of people in Alberta. They are busy distributing supplies such as cots, blankets and other items. Volunteers are also supporting 10 shelters for evacuees in different affected communities as well as providing registration and inquiry for people affected by flooding and their families.

The Canadian Red Cross has enlisted the help of volunteers in other parts of the country to support this response, including shipping supplies from Ontario, activating a call centre in Atlantic Canada as we can see in this CTV News piece, and deploying trained volunteers from outside the area immediately impacted by the flooding.

These Red Cross volunteers from Edmonton quickly responded to the call to deploy.

Updates for people impacted by the flooding

The Red Cross has set up a toll free number 1-866-696-6484 to help reconnect evacuees with loved ones. You can also register online through Safe and Well to let loved ones know you are safe or to check on family members' well-being.

If you and your family are safe, we encourage you to check in on your neighbours.

We also have additional tips for those who may be able to return home in the coming days once officials declare it safe to do so:

  • Before entering your home, look for damage such as loose power lines, damaged gas lines, cracks in the foundation, etc. Be careful when entering as there may be damage around the entrance.
  • Stay away from downed power lines.
  • Discard any food that may have been in contact with flood waters or that may be spoiled as a result of power outages. When in doubt, throw it out!
  • Do not use water that may be contaminated for washing, cleaning, drinking, or food preparation.
  • If you smell natural or propane gas, or hear a hissing noise, leave your home immediately and call 911.
  • Wear protective clothing such as rubber boots, gloves and masks during cleanup.
