Dedication that span nearly half a century
Not many people can say they’ve been a part of the Red Cross for nearly half a century. Marian Holt can.
As a dedicated volunteer for over 46 years, Marian’s association with the Red Cross stems back to grade school. At that time, you could become a junior member if you donated a nickel.
Over the decades, Marian has spent most of her time volunteering with transportation services in the Toronto-area, but has also worked in disaster management, and was President of the Scarborough Branch Council for 15 years. Now, since moving to Vineland, she volunteers at the Niagara branch office.
One of Marian’s most memorable moments was meeting the Queen Mother in 1989. Marian and five others from the Red Cross Corps stood as the guards of honour during the Queen Mother’s visit to Sunnybrook Veterans Hospital.
Now, in her 84th year, Marian has the honour of being awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal, recognition she very much deserves. When asked what she enjoys the most about the Red Cross, she replied, “The interesting encounters I get to have with people in the community and in the branch. My volunteer work has helped keep me young.”
