The Red Cross Round-up

The Round-up offers a weekly sample of what our sister Red Cross Societies are working on around the world.

NIGERIA: Like thousands of people affected by the floods in Nigeria, those living in Udagba are fighting to rebuild their20130104-nigeria-floods-main lives. With support from the IFRC, the Nigerian Red Cross is focusing on lifesaving relief priorities.  More than 5,000 people were assisted in the immediate aftermath, receiving items like shelter kits, tarps, buckets, mats, jerry cans, kitchen sets and clothing. It is in Udagba that a second round of distributions targeting 12 states has officially begun. The Nigerian Red Cross is taking a holistic approach to helping those most affected by implementing programs that will help families become more resistant to future disasters.

HAITI: Three years after a devastating earthquake struck Haiti, the Canadian Red Cross continues to help earthquake survivors rebuild and recover. Efforts have shifted from immediate life-saving assistance to long-term recovery to ensure communities can build a stronger and healthier future. To date, more than 7,500 earthquake and hurricane resistant homes have been constructed, providing essential stability and protection to over 37,500 of Haiti’s most vulnerable people. The Canadian Red Cross is also helping to build stronger safer communities through health, violence prevention and disaster risk reduction programming.

COLOMBIA: In eight neighbourhoods in the city of Medellín the ICRC has launched the More Humanitarian Spaces, More Alternatives project, designed to reduce the effects of armed violence in communities. The initiative, which will run for four years, has been under way since 2011 in association with the Antioquia branch of the Colombian Red Cross and in conjunction with other public and private bodies.
