Photo of the Day: The role of logistics in emergency response

Disaster response requires a lot of “behind the scenes” work to organize emergency relief supplies in all of the Red Cross warehouses.

The warehouse in Manila contains enough supplies to provide for 15,000 families or approximately 75,000 people following a disaster. The supplies must be distributed to regional Red Cross branches around the Philippines to eliminate any wait times in the event of an emergency.

As emergency supplies are taken from the warehouse and distributed regionally, volunteers ensure that materials and kits are quickly replaced and empty spaces filled to prepare for the next emergency. The Philippine Red Cross anticipate they will use the entire supply of the Manila warehouse in their ongoing response to flooding in the area – that’s a lot of logistics planning!
