The Red Cross Red Crescent Movement believes that volunteering is at the heart of community building. As world leaders, organizations and other stakeholders come together this week at Rio+20 to discuss social, environmental and economic resilience to climate change, we want to call attention to the role our volunteers are playing in building resilient communities worldwide.
In this photo, taken in 2009 in the town of Solferino, Italy, 13,000 members of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement embarked on an 8.6-kilometer torch-lit procession called the Fiaccolata to celebrate the 150th anniversary of its creation.
More than 13 million people volunteer for the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement. This means more than 13 million stories of individuals that, directly or indirectly, work to promote resilience in their communities.
