Don’t worry, be happy, and help your heart

Staying positive is not just good for your frame of mind but possibly also your heart.

The Harvard School of Public Health recently reviewed more than 200 studies and found that staying upbeat appears to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and events such as heart attacks and stroke. The researchers also found that positive people tend to have healthier lifestyles including balanced diets, exercise and enough sleep. In addition, having a positive outlook was associated with lower blood pressure, healthier blood/fat status and normal body weight.

The study was published April 17 in the journal Psychological Bulletin.

If you have ever taken a Red Cross CPR class, you know that stress (along with age, diet, smoking, and lack of exercise) is a common risk factor for cardiac arrests. It’s just one more reason to try to “Keep Calm & Carry On” and also smile.
