Communities affected by Hurricane Sandy are devising ingenious ways to help each other recover from the storm that has left thousands without power and struggling to return to their normal routines.
The New York tech community has come together to coordinate office space and technical skills to help other New Yorkers left without power or with damaged gadgets after the storm. Volunteers from the New York Tech Meetup group have contributed their technical skills to developing hacking projects like NeedMapper which connects victims with volunteers, as well as a platform for dealing with future disasters. The volunteers are helping New York residents get back to work faster by establishing co-working office locations for those looking for a temporary office space.
An 11-year-old Hoboken resident also found a way to help those in need in the aftermath of Sandy. Lucy Walkowiak set up a pop-up Internet café and charging station in front of her home so that neighbours could charge their electronics and connect to the Internet in exchange for a small monetary donation to the Red Cross. The Internet Café and charging system also serves coffee which has been contributed by Lucy’s neighbours.
