Dispatch from New York: The singing ERV driver

Immediately after arriving into New York I travelled to Breezy Point, an area devastated by Superstorm Sandy. I had the privilege of meeting many inspiring Red Cross volunteers who were busy distributing food and relief items and extraordinary people who showed tremendous resilience after their homes were destroyed.

The Red Cross presence in this community was incredible. Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs) were travelling around the area to provide warm meals, snacks and water to affected families and a distribution point was set up to provide clean up kits, hygiene items and other essential  supplies.

Among the many volunteers I met was George, who came all the way from Florida to help out. He is operating one of the ERVs in the area.  George enjoys singing into his truck’s loud speaker to notify the community about the warm meals he is providing. I quickly discovered that his singing not only helped encourage people to come and get food, he also put a smile on many faces.
