During the Trillium Resolve Disaster Exercise that is currently taking place this week, the Ontario Zone Disaster Management team has had the opportunity to pilot a new concept for the rapid deployment of relief supplies to disaster areas. Using standardized modules (“sea cans”) stored at strategic bases around Ontario, the Red Cross is now able to store twice as many materials as it could prior to using the sea cans, in a third of the time. These modules can be transported by plane, train, ship or truck and can hold up to 800 cots at a time.
