Calling all shutterbugs on the East Coast

As we continue to see images of young people affected by the unrest and violence unfolding in several countries in Africa and in the Middle East, a group of Canadian Red Cross youth volunteers from Halifax wants to bring attention to the impact conflict and war has on children through a unique photography and essay challenge.

Photo taken in Cambodia at the famous temples: Angkor Wat, in 2008.

Atlantic Canadians of all ages can submit their original photos of landscapes, architecture, cityscapes or portraits taken during their travels in any country affected by war or armed conflict at any time in history. Yes, that even includes Canada, the US and many other countries. The photos don’t have to actually depict war or conflict.

People can also submit 500-word research essays or personal statements on the topic of children and war in a specific country. Selected essays and photographs will be part of a travelling exhibit this spring in the Maritimes. The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2011 for photos and March 10, 2011 for essays.

Visit www.redcross.ca/childrenandwar for details on how to submit photos and/or essays as well as guidelines.

The volunteers who are organizing the challenge are part of the Red Cross Even Wars Have Limits working group which focuses on outreach and awareness around global issues. They’ve previously organized film screenings, created short videos, spoken to school groups and helped organize other events in the community.
