Canada Day festivities from the first aid tent

If you were celebrating Canada Day on Parliament Hill last Thursday, you probably noticed Red Cross volunteers around. They are members of the First Aid Service Team (FAST) who were working alongside the Ottawa Emergency Services and RCMP to make sure the 100,000 people who visited the Hill stayed safe by providing first aid.

“Canada Day is just such a big party.  Sure we work hard at the First Aid tent too, but this way we get to be part of the party while helping to make sure other people can enjoy their day too,” said Team Leader Alice d’Anjou.

This is an annual tradition for FAST, who treat about 150-200 people every Canada Day. They have seen every thing from minor cuts and bruises to heart attacks and diabetic crises!   They clean up a lot of scraped knees, bandage blistered heels and ice twisted ankles.  They also see a lot of heat exhaustion, dehydration and sunburns.

 Great work!
