Sudbury volunteer’s clocked 36,000km

If you live in Sudbury, then chances are you’ve seen Red Cross volunteer Alfred Lafantaisie driving around the community in a van decked out in the Red Cross logo. He’s clocked 36,000 kilometres, taking seniors to medical appointments.

He’s gotten to know his clients well over the years. One, in particular, is a 93-year-old woman, who he calls “Ma.” She’s a little unsteady on her feet and Alfred has to meet her at her front door to walk her to the car. “She tells me every time that she’s had two shots of gin this morning so she’s a little out of balance. I laugh every time.”

Alfred first started volunteering with the Red Cross more than eight years ago. Now, he’s nearly 70-years-old and says he’ll keep driving for the Red Cross for as long as he can.
