York Region Youth Action group
Across the province, youth volunteers are bringing new energy and fresh ideas to the Canadian Red Cross. The group I am involved with is the Region of York youth group, which has about 60 member, ranging in ages from 14-19.
Our accomplishments include creating a high school handbook - a guide to help those wanting to start a high school Youth Action Group in Ontario under the Canadian Red Cross.
We also held a monthly Humanitarian Speaker Series with Red Cross delegates who have worked around the world on various missions. In October, we held a Social Justice & Diversity Youth Conference for youth to learn how to start and implement fundraising events with the Red Cross, along with learning about the importance of social justice and diversity.
One issue that we have focused on creating awareness for is the problem of undetonated landmines and cluster munitions that continue to hurt people worldwide. We feel like this is one issue that students can understand and will be inspired to take action.
