Lynn Kergan’s got a thing for emergencies

Not that she wishes them upon people; her thing is teaching people how to be prepared if disaster strikes.

As the volunteer operational lead for disaster management in Halton, part of Lynn’s work involves providing workshops on disaster preparedness. She goes to schools and homes for seniors to teach them how to be prepared for an emergency, such as those that force families from their homes or cause lengthy power outages.

An active volunteer, Lynn contributes about 30-40 hours every month, helping with various needs, such assisting with mass H1N1 vaccination clinics and local emergencies. Just recently, she responded to back-to-back emergencies in her community.

One recent emergency was a fire that forced a family out of its home. The Red Cross found the family staying with relatives. “When we asked if there was anything we could help with, they asked us for extra blankets because there was not enough at the house they were staying at,” she says. “Sometimes it’s the little things like that that go a long way.”
