From Bingo to PDA, this youth volunteer is making a difference in Durham

When Brent Baxter finished high school, he was looking for a way to give back to his community. He started volunteering with the Durham Region Red Cross and the branch’s bingo program.

In 2000-2001 he began volunteering with Personal Disaster Assistance (PDA).  The program helps families who have lost their home because of a fire or flood, by providing shelter, food, clothing and other support. Brent and his team are essential in helping these families during the first 72 hours after experiencing a serious disaster.

When asked why he chose the Red Cross as his first volunteer experience Brent says that the he heard of the Red Cross’ national and international reputation and that it was the obvious choice when deciding where to complete his hours of community service for school. “Being a part of it has given me so much pride,” he says. “I have learned so much about the Canadian Red Cross in general and disaster management in particular.”
